2. Finch – "What It Is to Burn (Demo)"
It was between this and "Sweetness."
"What It Is to Burn" was one of the first songs Finch ever released, but it sounds the last song they would ever be able to record. Vocalist Nate Barcalow deserves an A+ for effort, and the music complements his intensity like a boss.
As it wasn't released until 2002, I couldn't pick the studio version of the song, but the demo version, featured on a 2001 Drive-Thru compilation, is superior anyway. The studio version sounds impotent and sterile, stripped of all nuance and soul.

2. Gob – "I Hear You Calling"
"I Hear You Calling" is a near perfect pop-punk song. It's got a great and easily sung chorus, a "quiet" part that builds to be really loud (really important, see: almost every good NFG, Sum 41, Blink-182, or whatever other pop-punk band you like song), and it's short (under 3 minutes).
Jon: This wasn't even the best Canadian pop-punk song of 2001 (see: "Fat Lip").

This type of idea has been regurgitated time and time again, but I like your fresh take on it – and like the side commentary as well. I'm interested to see how it plays out.
Props on using the demo version of 'What It Is To Burn' – I've always felt the same way about it. Although I can't imagine ever listening to them again.
